Fall Service Day 2009
More than 400 volunteers from about two dozen high-tech companies in Central Texas rolled up their sleeves Friday, Oct. 23, to perform maintenance and beautification projects at Austin’s Zilker Park. The volunteers worked all around the 351 acre park at sites including the Austin Nature & Science Center, Zilker Botanical Garden, Barton Creek Greenbelt, McBeth Recreation Center, Zilker Nature Preserve, Beverly S. Sheffield Education Center, and Barton Springs Pool Bathhouse.
Projects included landscaping, creating several mosaics, removal of invasive species, gardening, painting, and tree planting. Zilker Park’s Program Manager, Margaret Russell, was thrilled with the work that took place during the Service Day. "The sparkling accomplishments made by the many volunteers are wonderful to behold, and will have a lasting impact on our grounds, our programs, and our visitors."

"This makeover of Zilker Park demonstrates how much the tech community cares about Austin," said Eugene Sepulveda, CEO of the Entrepreneurs Foundation of Central Texas. "Employees of local tech companies can make a major impact through this meaningful volunteer experience."
Volunteers will donate about 2,400 hours of labor during the Fall Service Day.
"The Fall Service Day is a great way—particularly amid these challenging economic times—to make a contribution to the community without writing a check," Sepulveda said.
