ALS Association - South Texas Chapter

Individual and Group Volunteer Opportunities: The
ALS Association South Texas Chapter is the only nationally affiliated
not-for-profit health organization dedicated solely to the fight
against ALS. The South Texas Chapter covers all the bases - research,
patient and community services, public education, and advocacy - in
providing help and hope to those facing the disease in 93 South Texas
counties. The mission of The ALS Association is to find a cure for and improve living with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
The ALS Association has several opportunities to volunteer, such as the The Walk to D'feet ALS,
special events, office help, and fundraising! The ALS Association
South Texas has volunteer opportunities for individuals, small and
corporate groups. We are
continuously looking for Walk Committee members, Corporate Recruitment

| Alzheimer's Association - Capital of Texas Chapter |
Upcoming Events: The 17th annual Austin Memory Walk, held on October 4, 2008 at Austin High School,
is a 5k run/walk for anyone touched by Alzheimer's disease and anyone
who understands the threat it presents to our nation. Help
families, caregivers, concerned citizens and community leaders in their
efforts by participating in this worthwhile and highly visible
event. Your support will help fund our local services while
presenting you with an opportunity to help a worthy cause. For

Individual Volunteer Opportunities: Individuals may participate by walking for the cause. Register as an individual walker or runner on our website to
help us raise money. We also need help setting up the event, working
water stops, and ensuring our participants have a great
experience. Group Volunteer Opportunities: Form a team! Gather up your family and friends to form a team and raise money for the Alzheimer's Association!
Forming a team can be a great moral booster for employees, a way to
raise money for your community, and an easy way to get involved.

need door prizes to hand out to our volunteers and walkers at the
Memory Walk. Anything from $25-$100 in value is acceptable for a

| Austin Child Guidance Center |
Austin
Child Guidance Center eases mental health issues such as depression,
trauma, grief/loss, anxiety, and parent-child relationship problems
suffered by youth up to age 17. Counseling, assessment, and parenting classes are accessible to families regardless of income or ability to pay. Individual Volunteer Opportunities: (1) Volunteer play leaders provide a safe and fun space for children and teens in the waiting room. Volunteers must commit to one 2-hour time shift each week for at least one semester (fall, spring, summer). The Center is open Mon-Thu 8am-8pm and Fri 8am-6pm. (2) Board members are needed to support and promote the work of Austin Child Guidance Center, provide oversight, and raise funds. Board terms are two years, with the option to renew for two additional terms
(or a total of six consecutive years). Time commitment is 2-4
hours a month and the financial commitment is a minimum donation of
$1,000/year. Group Volunteer Opportunities: Volunteers are needed once a month
to help with toy leaning and sanitation either as a one-time
opportunity or ongoing. Cleaning usually takes place on Fridays
and volunteers can help for several hours or all day, as needed. In-Kind Donations Appreciated: Copy
paper, manila folders, legal pads, post-it notes, staples, tape, binder
clips, file folder labels, construction paper, markers, sidewalk chalk,
crayons, colored pencils, jump ropes, child/family board games,
crossword puzzles, word puzzles, play dough, gift cards to Walmart,

| Austin Children's Shelter |
Austin
Children's Shelter (ACS) provides emergency shelter, food, clothing,
cognitive and emotional evaluation and counseling, medical and dental
care, on-site preschool, after-school tutoring, academic enrichment
activities, and supervisory care for approximately 300 abused and
neglected children per year. Children remain at the Austin Children's
Shelter for 14-90 days while the legal system determines appropriate
guardianship and custodial care. Most children transition into the
foster care. Individual and Group Volunteer Opportunities: There are both group and individual volunteer opportunities at ACS. ACS volunteers are asked to make a commitment of 4 hours per week and
give one on one attention to the children in our care through talking,
playing games, helping with homework and chaperoning outings. One time,

Austin Partners in Education |
Individual Volunteer Opportunities: Help put the PUBLIC in PUBLIC SCHOOLS: become a tutor!
Austin Partners in Education places trained volunteer tutors in
classrooms leading groups of three to four students once a week in
structured activities to help with reading fluency, reading
comprehension or math concepts. Academic coaching and mentoring help students stay in school, succeed academically, and build self-confidence. In
order to expand these programs next year, we need you to
volunteer. Whether you want to volunteer with 2nd graders or high
school seniors, in English or in Spanish, in North Austin or South
Austin, we've got a volunteer position for you! Group Volunteer Opportunities: If you're part of a group that likes to volunteer together, consider adopting a whole classroom! Each classroom in the Partners in Reading, Partners in Math, and Partners in Literature programs needs 5-8 volunteers working with small groups of students. Individual and Group Volunteer Opportunities: The Breast Cancer Resource Center is looking for a group of individuals to help with our upcoming exciting, Art Bra and Art Show, GRAPHIC II. Opportunities available to help with the Silent Auction, Registration, Refreshments, Set up/Tear Down. | Bull Creek Foundation |
Please volunteer to help maintain Bull Creek - We Need Your Help! Individual and Group Volunteer Opportunities: We are looking for individuals, families, companies, groups to "adopt" a part of our parks and trails.
Each volunteer group will help to patrol, remove trash, improve and
maintain the parks and trails. These can be planned events or on
your own when you have time.
We already have one adopting group! Employees of Brown and Caldwell
have adopted 1/4 mile of the Bull Creek trail on the west side of 360,
going south from the low water crossing.
Areas needing adoption are: 1)
Bull Creek District Park (leash free Doggie Park) on Lakewood Drive. 2)
Bull Creek Greenbelt trail from District Park to 360 and Lakewood Dr.
3). Bull Creek Greenbelt trail on the west side of 360 north from
Lakewood Dr. 4) Bull Creek Greenbelt trail on the east side of 360 to
Spicewood Springs Road. 5) The new Smith Memorial trail just west of
360 at Spicewood Springs Road. 6) St. Edward's Park and trail, about

| Cancer Connection |
Cancer
Connection, formerly CanCare Austin, is excited to announce their
recent partnership with St. David's Community Health Foundation and the
Lance Armstrong Foundation. Individual Volunteer Opportunities: Volunteers are needed to provide emotional support for cancer patients and their families. Volunteers
will be staffed in various Seton and St. David's hospitals in the
Austin area, and at the Texas Oncology and Southwest Regional Cancer
Center in the infusion rooms.
In addition to the hospitals and
oncology centers, Cancer Connection also needs volunteers to
participate in one-on-one matching with newly diagnosed cancer patients
and caregivers. The next volunteer training will be held April 11 - 12, 2008. To join their growing network of cancer survivors and loved ones, please apply online.

| Capital Area Food Bank of Texas |
Individual, Group Volunteer Opportunities and Upcoming Events: 1) 2nd Annual Scouting for Food: Keep Texas Fed: Healthy nonperishable food donations will be picked up on Saturday, April 12th. 5-8 volunteers to help collect donations at each site are needed. Visit our website for more information.
2) Reggae Festival: Sat. 4/19 and Sun. 4/20 from 12 pm to 10 pm at Auditorium Shores.
Proceeds benefit the Food Bank. This festival volunteer opportunity is open to individuals 18 years & older. We are seeking 160-200 volunteers (volunteers
get in free). Complete instructions will be provided at the beginning

3) 15th Annual NALC Stamp Out Hunger: Saturday, May 10 and Sunday, May 11: This nation-wide event happens annually in mid-May. Letter carriers collect food donations to benefit those at greatest hunger risk in an effort to fight hunger.
The Stamp Out Hunger drive is a nationwide effort to provide food to local food banks and pantries. The
nation's 230,000 letter carriers will be collecting food donations in
more than 10,000 local communities and delivering them to food bank
members of America's Second Harvest, the Nation's Food Bank Network and
other hunger relief organizations.
Donations come into the Food Bank and we need 55 adult volunteers (16 years old and older) per shift, to help sort the donations.The shift schedule for this two day PR event are: Saturday: 5am -7:30 pm 7-10 pm /Sunday: 11am-2pm, 1:30-4:30 pm. Individual and Group Volunteer Opportunities: Volunteer with The Care Communities! In this high tech world, make a high-touch difference in someone's life for only 4 hours a month.
Volunteers will be part of a team who provide compassionate, practical
(non-medical) care for someone with cancer or AIDS. For someone
who does not have an adequate support system, you can offer a helping
hand. You will be performing those tasks you already do for family or friends (grocery
shopping, transportation to medical visits, cooking an occasional meal,

a Case Manager Assistant to provide support to the office's staff

Upcoming Events:
The
Central Texas Entrepreneur Funding Symposium, the only local conference
focused exclusively on delivering expert strategies for securing
funding from angel investors and venture capital firms, announced the keynote speakers for this year's event. Honorable Geoffrey S. Connor, Co-Founder & CACH Chairman will be the morning keynote, discussing "Texas and the Global Economy". In the afternoon, Jamie Rhodes, founder of the Central Texas Angel Network and chief executive officer of Perceptive Sciences, Inc., will deliver a keynote address about Angel Investing in Austin. Central Texas entrepreneurs are already signing up for the Funding Symposium which takes place on April 18th, at the JJ Pickle Center. This year's event will feature a Fast Pitch Competition.
The Angel network will serve on a panel to discuss the do's and don'ts
in the funding process and host a Fast Pitch Competition where
entrepreneurs deliver a one-minute pitch in front of the Angel panel,
with the winner gaining a full presentation with the network. Entrepreneurs can submit their executive summaries for consideration by sending an email to CTAN director Hall Martin. Deadline for submission is April 1. "From
start-ups to established organizations looking for additional
injections of capital, attendees will learn how to prepare their
companies for funding, discover alternative sources of capital and hear
from successful entrepreneurs." said Jason Myers, Publisher of Business

in order to facilitate their transition to college and make the process

Fredericksburg C.A.R.E.S. is on a fast track to recruit new
volunteers to help us find an immediate solution to the problem of
glass recycling. Our town Recycle Center is losing money on glass
recycling, and the glass that is coming in to our Recycle Center is
being trucked to Waco and depositied in their landfill. This
discovery has generated a groundswell of citizen involvement,
resulting in the formation last year of the above citizen-based
nonprofit organization. As citizens responsible for the future of
this historically rich community, we want to improve many aspects
of our waste disposal policies through cooperation with the City
of Fredericksburg and Gillespie County officials. We are well on
our way.
Individual and Group Volunteer Opportunities: We welcome volunteer input from all over the country. Austin is of particular interest given its leadership in environmental issues. We are also planning an Earth Day Celebration at Marktplatz (Main Square) in Fredericksburg on Saturday, April 19th from 11am to 3pm. Groups
of volunteers from Austin, San Antonio and outlying areas are

manning the various booths, giving out information, helping with some
of the kid's craft activities, or assisting with set up early Saturday
morning. If your volunteer group is "green" and working, as we are, towards collective solutions to environmental problems, including food sources, then we encourage you to set up a booth and sell products, give information or otherwise make a contribution to our efforts. | Upcoming Events:
Fuse Box is a confluence of contemporary theater, film, dance, visual
art and music at various galleries and performance venues across
Austin. On April 24 - May 3, thousands of people will flock to Austin, Texas as the fourth annual FUSE BOX Festival takes
flight. We are assembling a dynamic lineup of some of the most vibrant
and interesting artists from around the country as well as some of the
boldest artistic voices from right here in Central Texas. Over the course of ten days, streets, buildings, bridges and sidewalks will become a canvas for pioneering new work.
Museums, galleries and performance venues will host stunning
performances and installations. Austin itself will act as both a
peninsula to the larger global stage, and as a lens into contemporary
life. Individual Volunteer Opportunities: We
are looking for individuals to help with box office, ushering, and
promotion of the festival. Volunteers receive free tickets and a pass
to our late-night hangout, which will feature music, installations, and
performances.

Girlstart is looking for female professionals with programming experience to provide technical assistance and informal mentoring to high school girls at our after-school Project IT Girl meetings. Volunteers must Be passionate about helping girls see a future for themselves in technology, Attend one orientation meeting via conference call (Friday, March 14, 11:30 - 1:00pm / Monday, March 17, 11:30 - 1:00pm),and Commit to volunteering at least twice during the fall semester.

Expanding Your Horizons 2008! Hello
Volunteers! As many of you know, Expanding Your Horizons 2008 is right
around the corner! This exciting Girlstart program will be held at the University Teaching Center on the UT campus on March 29, 2008.
Approximately 300 middle school girls will have the opportunity to
participate in hands-on workshops led by professional women from math,
science, engineering and technology fields! We need lots of volunteers on the day of the event to help everything run smoothly! Check out the exciting ways you can help out. Please note that the number of volunteers needed is listed next to each opportunity.

- Workforce Development, Executive Administration, Marketing and
Retail.
2. Vintage Hunting Helper: If you have an eye for vintage & you like to shop, this is the volunteer opportunity for you! Goodwill is looking for creative people to help identify and pull vintage goods
from our store donations for the purpose of selling them as "boutique"
items. Boutique items are sold at higher prices and bring in additional
revenue to help support our mission.
3. Goodwill Community Center Volunteers: Goodwill is always looking for volunteers to help with special projects and general administrative tasks.
Group Volunteer Opportunities: GreenWorks: Whether small or large, our GreenWorks program can accommodate your group, and is ideal for a teambuilding exercise. Volunteers participate in a demanufacturing process of donated computer systems that will be resold or recycled.
Each month, Goodwill's Environmental Business Service processes 250
tons of e-waste for either resale or recycle - diverting these
end-of-life systems from landfills. Donating your time as a volunteer
will directly benefit the environment by helping Goodwill ensure
responsible management and recycling of donated systems.

focused on providing volunteers with the basics of how to lead
projects; how to manage and recruit volunteers; ways to identify needs
in the community; adopt existing or create new volunteer projects; and
ways to locate and utilize resources. Participants will walk away from the training with the ability to translate skills and knowledge into action and involvement. The
training will allow Volunteer Project Leaders to develop a strong and
vibrant community, gain skills in civics and community building,
increase personal leadership capabilities, and assist Hands On Central
Texas in creating and implement community service project throughout

serve, a chance to learn about community issues, and help develop new

Individual Volunteer Opportunities: Lifelong Friends Pet Adoptions (formerly Lago Vista PAWS) is looking for devoted volunteers to care for our shelter dogs and cats.
If you would enjoy making a difference in the lives of homeless
animals, then we are the place for you! You will get plenty of
exercise, have the pleasure of meeting other animal lovers, and have
fun caring for dogs and cats that will shower you with love and
attention because they appreciate the time, love, and energy you give
them. We need caregivers for AM and PM shifts, seven days a week. Some
volunteers come in once or twice a week; others come in once or twice a
month. The amount of time you give to our shelter family is entirely up to you.
Dog
caregivers must be at least 16 years old, and cat caregivers must be at
least 13. Minors, ages 13-15, must be accompanied by a parent or

| In-Kind Donations Appreciated: In 2007 the United Way Capital Area launched the Gifts In Kind program,
a new and innovative program benefitting close to eighty nonprofit
organizations in central Texas. The purpose of the program is to assist
local nonprofit organizations in carrying out their mission in the
community by leveraging their financial resources through in kind
contributions. This includes not only their client in-kind needs
but also their business needs. The United Way Gifts In Kind program encourages non-cash donations of new and gently used items such
as office supplies, equipment, and furniture, new toys, new books,
shelter operation supplies (i.e., soap, toothpaste, diapers)
entertainment coupons and tickets along with gift cards to local retail
